BIO BASIC LAB is located within the research centre "Parco Tecnico Scientifico" of Pavia University, and it consists of three laboratories:
LABORATORY OF MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS
Core activity is the safety and efficacy analysis of finished products, in accordance with current legislation and internal protocols: assessments of the microbial load, search for pathogens, evaluation of the preservative system efficacy and anti-bacterial activity.
LABORATORY OF CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL/INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS
Laboratory technicians assess the stability and compatibility of the container-content, determinate the PAO and revalidate batches of raw materials, finished and semi-finished products, in accordance with current legislation and internal protocols. Staff evaluates the physical-organoleptic parameters (e.g. pH, density, viscosity, colour, odour, appearance) and performs specific analysis on sunscreen, make-up and skincare products, following both standard methods and internal protocols.
LABORATORY OF IN VITRO ANALYSIS
In addition to the standardized methods which guarantee the toxicological safety of the tested products, the technicians of the in vitro laboratory develop alternative and customized tests to demonstrate the efficacy of raw materials, semi-finished and finished products. In compliance with the European Regulation 1223/2009, which bans animal testing in the cosmetic field, analysis are performed on alternative biological models, such as cell cultures and reconstructed human tissues. These structures are more complex than two-dimensional systems, and they are able to provide punctual results with a better vitro-vivo correlation.
